ITF & USTA Tournament Results 6/18 – 6/27
Over the first official weekend of summer, the players of the JMTA took to the courts to compete in ITF and USTA Eastern section tournaments. As usual, due to our players’ determination to train 52, the JMTA had several tournament wins.
Competing in the ITF Bank of Bermuda Foundation tournament in Bermuda was Christina Sisti. Having to go through two rounds of qualifying, Sisti then won her first round match in straight sets, which led her to a 2nd round matchup against the #5 seed in which Sisti was able to also defeat the #5 seed in straight sets. In the Quarterfinals, Sisti then squared off against fellow JMTA player Michelle Sorroko ultimately winning that match 6-2; 6-4 to earn a spot in the Semifinals. In the semis, Sisti fought from a set down to win the 2nd and 3rd sets and the match. In the Finals match, despite a strong effort, Sisti fell in two sets earning her 2nd place in the tournament.
In USTA Eastern play, our first winner of the weekend at the Level 1 Pingry June Championships was Victoria Sec. In her run to the tournament championship in the Girls’ 18 division, Sec did not drop a set through 4 rounds of play. In other Girls’ 18 action at the Level 1 Reis Tennis Center June Championships at Cornell, Gibson Thomas won both the Girls’ 18 singles and doubles titles. In Girls’ 16 competition at the Level 1 APTC June Championships, Shawnte Beale had a very impressive run to the tournament championship. To win the tournament, Beale defeated the #1 seed in the Quarterfinals, and the #2 seed in the Finals. At the Level 1 SPORTIME Lake Isle June Championships, Ari Cotoulas won the Boys’ 12 title. In his run to the championship, Ari defeated the number 5, 6, and 8 seeds to claim his second tournament victory of 2016.
In Level 1B action at the SPORTIME Bethpage June Challenger, Griffin Schlesinger won the Boys’ 16 title. In Girls’ 12 competition at the Level 1B CMTC June Challenge, Isabella Sha won in dominant fashion, as Sha did not drop a set throughout the tournament. At the Level 1B Courtsense at Bogota & TRC Challenger, Charlie Valentine once again claimed a tournament victory by winning the Boys’ 10 title without dropping a set in 4 rounds of play.
Playing at their home courts over the weekend and winning their respective divisions at the Level 2 SPORTIME Randall’s Island were both Dominick Mosejczuk and Matthew Mosejczuk. In the Boys’ 16 competition, Matthew came back to win a third set tiebreak in his finals match after losing the first set, while Dominick claimed the Boys’ 12 championship after defeating both the #3 and #4 seeds. Our last winner of the weekend was Ryan Mark, who won the Boys’ 12 title at the Level 2 Hardscrabble June Open. In his run to the championship, Mark’s overall game score was 24-5.
Congratulations to all of our winners!
