JMTA players take to the court for National Spring Team Championships, Level 1’s, Level 1B’s, Level 2R’s, and Level 2O’s.

USTA Tournament Results March 11th – 13th 

In a weekend full of tournaments ranging from National Spring Team Championships to Level 2 events, the players of the JMTA once again showed that hard work pays off, as the JMTA had several notable tournament results!

At the National Spring Team Championships, which took place in Mobile, Alabama at the Mobile Area Tennis Association facilities, two of our players placed in the top 3 teams for their respective competitions. In the Boys competition, both Cannon Kingsley and Daniel Pellerito finished in second and third place with their teams, respectively, playing in the Boys’ 16 position.

At the Level 1B Jericho/Westbury March Challenger, Janelle Chen claimed the Girls’ 16 title, winning the final in a third set tie-break. Winning the Girls’ 14 title at the Level 1B SPORTIME Bethpage March Challenger was Gabriella Sciarrotta. At the Level 1B World Gym March Challenger, Theodore Murphy won the Boys’ 10 title, defeating fellow JMTA player Marco Zeits-Segura in the final. Rounding out our weekend winners was Bella Kaplan, who won the Girls’ 16 title at the Level 2O at SPORTIME Randall’s Island.

Rubin Wins Indian Wells Qualies; Loeb WC Into Main Draw

JMTA’s star pros Noah Rubin and Jamie Loeb will be on full display in front of the tennis world today at the huge BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., with both ready for main draw action today.

Rubin advanced through qualifying, bouncing Dennis Novikov to advance to the main draw, where he will take on Rajeev Ram, an American ranked No. 63. The Rubin-Ram match is scheduled fifth on Stadium 3 (first match begins at 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET).

Loeb, issued a wild card into the main bracket, has drawn Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas, ranked No. 87. That match is first on Stadium 5 at 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET.

JMTA Players Impress in First Weekend of Spring Tournaments

With spring officially upon us, the players of the JMTA took to the courts competing in tournaments ranging from Spring Team National Championships to L3’s. With Spring Team National Championships running through Wednesday, results will be posted following the conclusion of those events!

At the L1B Bethpage State Park March Challenger, Perene Wang claimed the Girls 18 title! In her run to the championship, Perene faced tough competition, having to defeat the #1 seed in the quarterfinals. At the L1B Jericho/Westbury March Challenger, Alexander Roti won the Boys 16 title. Winning the Boys 14 title at the L1B Cunningham Park Tennis Center March Challenger was Hudson Beaudoin. Rounding out our winners for this weekend was Ari Cotoluas. In an all JMTA final at the L1B GHRC March Challenger, Ari defeated Nicholas Murphy to win the Boys 12 title!

JMTA PLAYERS CLAIM 5 TOURNAMENT WINS THIS WEEKEND!!!

USTA Tournament Results 2/26-2/28

Over the last weekend of February, the players of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy once again took to the courts playing in tournaments ranging from +L1’s to L3’s.

In an all JMTA final at the +L1 West Rock Eastern Grand Prix, Jake Bhangdia defeated Cannon Kingsley in 3 sets to win the Boys 18 title.

Winning her third tournament in three weekends was Calista Sha, who won the Girls 16 title at the L1B SPORTIME Harbor Island February Challenger. In her run to the finals, Calista won 36 games, while only losing 6. At the L1B SPORTIME Lake Isle February Challenger, Anton Semenov won the Boys 14 title at the L1B SPORTIME Lake Isle February Challenger. Winning the Boys 14 title at the L1B SPORTIME Syosset Winter Challenger was Matthew Cashin. Rounding out our winners for this weekend was Isabella Sha who won the Boys 12 title at the L1B Point Set Tennis February Challenger.

JMTA Players Find Success over President’s Day Weekend!

Over President’s Day Weekend, the players of the JMTA took to the courts with several winners in Level 1B, Level 2R, and Level 2O tournaments!

At the Level 1B GHRC Feb Freeze Challenger, Calista Sha took home the Girls’ 16 title. In Level 2R action, Andrew Ena won the Boys’ 12 City Parks Indoor Regional, defeating the #1 and #3 seeds along the way. Ena’s weekend did not end there, however, as he also won the Boys’ 12 Level 2O SPORTIME Syosset February Open.

At the Level 2O Alley Pond President’s Week Open, several JMTA players won their respective divisions. In the Girls 14 competition, Leah Margulies took home the trophy. Also winning was Bobby Duskin. Not only did Bobby win the Boys’ 12 Singles competition, he also won the Boys’ 12 Doubles title along with fellow JMTA Player Jack Griffin.

Big Weekend at National Selection and Closed Regional Events for JMTA Players!

USTA Tournament Results 2/13-15/2016

With players active in tournaments in the Southern, Mid Atlantic, and Eastern USTA sections this weekend ranging in level from National Selection Tournaments to Closed Regional Championships to sectional Level 1A’s, L1B’s and L2O’s, the JMTA, as usual, did not fail to impress!

At the February National Selection Tournament at RWTTC, Sean Wei, added another tournament win to his impressive 2016 season by claiming the Boys’ 16 Doubles title, defeating fellow JMTA player Daniel Pellerito in the final. Recording her first tournament win of 2016 was Perene Wang, who at the February National Selection Tournament at Tri-City Fitness took home the Girls’ 14 Doubles trophy.

In a very impressive showing at the February Closed Regional Tournament at Farmington Valley Racquet Club in which he did not drop a set throughout the entire tournament, Sean Hannity claimed the Boys’ 18 title. Sweeping both the singles and doubles events at the Boys’ 14 competition at the Closed Regional Tournament at Sound Shore was Noah Edelman. His quarterfinal match was quite a physical and mental test. Noah saved a match point in the second set, was down 1-5, 0-30 in the third set, saved four more match points and ended up winning 7-4 in the 3rd set breaker. With two hours rest he then won his semifinal match, another come-from-behind 3-setter, 6-3 in the third. He beat the #1 seed in the finals yesterday (another 3-setter) after winning doubles earlier in the day. Another doubles champion at the Regional Level this weekend was Chelsea Williams, who won the Girls’ 16 Doubles competition at the Closed Regional Tournament at CourtSense at Bogota & Tenafly RC.

In L1A competition this past weekend, the JMTA had three winners! At the L1A Centercourt Mt Olive President’s Championships, Sophia Graver won the Girls 18 title. In a very impressive run, Sophia defeated the #1, #4, and #6 seeds to take home the trophy. At the L1A SPORTIME Schenectady President’s Cup (National Showcase Tournament), Calista Sha took home the Girls’ 16 title without dropping a set the entire tournament. And on Long Island it was Anton Semenov, who won the Boys’ 14 L1A Deer Park President’s Championships. In the finals match, Anton defeated the #1 seed 6-4; 6-4.

Rounding out our JMTA winners for this weekend were Leila Epstein and Neel Epstein. At the L2O SPORTIME at Randall’s Island February 2016 Open, Leila won the Girls 14 title, while Neel won the Boys 14 title.

JMTA players capture +L1 Grand Prix, Level 1B and Level 2O tournaments.

In an all JMTA final at the +L1 Eastern Grand Prix at Alley Pond Tennis Center, second seeded Chelsea Williams defeated fellow JMTA player and #1 seed Merri Kelly to take home the Girls’ 16 title. Competing at the Level 1B SPORTIME Lake Isle January Challenger, Lia Kim won the Girls’ 16 event, defeating the #2 seed in the quarterfinals along the way, the week ending Jan. 31. At the Level 1B Ross School Winter Challenger, Janelle Chen took home the Girls’ 14 trophy, while at the Level 2O Hardscrabble Winter Open, Alex Portnoy won the Boys’ 16 title by defeating the #1 seed in the final. Rounding out our winners for this weekend, the team of Bobby Duskin and Blakely Duskin won the Mixed 12 Doubles title at the Level 2O Winter Whiteout Cup in Long Beach.

In a weekend full of snow up to our knees, several JMTA players were in action!

With a very impressive final match at the L1B Hardscrabble January Challenger in which he defeated the #1 seed, Nikolay Sahakyan was able to take home the Boys’ 14 championship trophy, the week ending Jan. 24! Also winning this weekend was Neel Epstein, who grabbed the L2O January Open Boys’ 14 title at the New Rochelle Racquet Club.

JMTA players take two prestigious Eastern Super Six titles in addition to multiple Level 1B and Level 2O tournaments.

January 15-18 was an important weekend in Eastern junior tennis, with Super Six events in all age groups that were also national Level 3 events. At the Super Six at Port Washington, Athell Bennett was crowned the Boys’ 18 champion, defeating fellow JMTA player Jake Bhangdia in the semi-finals. In the Boys’ 16 Super Six at the Ross School, Sean Wei defeated another JMTA player, Cannon Kingsley, to take the title.

Denise Lai went two-for-two in finals in 2016, taking home the Girls’ 16 Level 1B title at Jericho/Westbury. Xander Roti was the champion of the Boys’ 16 Level 1B event at SPORTIME Harbor Island. And in doubles competition at the Level 1A in Binghamton, Alex Portnoy (partnered with Josef Sajonz) was the winner.

Level 2 action also saw JMTA champions, with Alex Vinsky taking the title at the Boys’ 14 Level 2O at Alley Pond, Sunjay Singh claiming the Boys’ 14 trophy at SPORTIME Randall’s Island and Olivia Boccia defeating the first seed in the semis to win the Girls’ 14 Level 2O at SPORTIME Lake Isle. The Level 2O at Long Beach had two JMTA champions, with Tola Glowacka winning the Girls’ 12 division and Costa Gizas taking the title in the Boys’ 12 doubles. Rounding out our winners for the weekend was Chantajah Mills, who took the Girls’ 10 title at the PSP Level 2 in the Bronx.

USTA Tournament Results 1/8-10/2016

JMTA players claim four titles in Empire Cup Doubles events, plus two Level 1B and two Level 2O titles.

Playing together for the first time, top-seeded Daniel Pellerito and Cannon Kingsley took the Boys’ 16 Empire Cup Doubles title at Stadium Tennis Center, defeating the #6, #8 and #10 seeds on the way. In another impressive run at Stadium, unseeded Sophie Graver (partnered with Stephanie Schrage) took out the #1, #2 and #3 seeds on the way to the Girls’ 18 Empire Cup Doubles championship, defeating fellow JMTA players Madison Battaglia and Natalie Rodilosso in the final. Meanwhile, at the Boys’ 18 Empire Cup Doubles at Tiger Tennis, Sean Wei (partnered with Michael Sun) defeated fellow JMTA players Athell Bennett and Sean Patrick in the final to take the title there. Rounding out the show was Billy Suarez, who partnered with Ryan Fishback to win the Boys’ 14 Empire Cup Doubles event, defeating fellow JMTA player Noah Edelman in the final.

In Level 1B play, Lazar Markovic took the Boys’ 16 title at Sportime Bethpage, coming back from a set down to defeat the first seed in the final. Also defeating the first seed in the final, second-seeded Bradley Bennett took home the Boys’ 14 Level 1B trophy at Point Set.

Seeded first on his home courts at Sportime Randall’s Island, Sadi Gulcelik took the Boys’ 16 Level 2O title, while Alexandra Ho, also seeded first, won the Girls’ 12 division of the Level 2O at Sportime Kings Park.

Eight Win Crowns Weekend Of Dec. 4-6

Last weekend was another prolific one for JMTA students, with eight emerging victorious in tournament play.

At the Empire Cup National Doubles Tournament at Reis Tennis Center of Cornell University, Peter Lohrbach won the Boys 18 doubles crown by defeating #1 seed and fellow JMTA Players Jake Bhangdia and Sean Mullins in the finals. Also at the Empire Cup, in an all JMTA final, Georgia Ryan and Chelsea Williams won at Girls 16s by also defeating the #1 seeded team of MK Hannity and Sophie Graver in the finals; At the L1B RWTTC Winter Challenger, Daniela Hernandez defeated the #2 seed in the finals, and the #1 seed in the semifinals; Astro Pilipovic took the Boys 12 title at the L1B NYJTL December Challenger; Bobby Duskin was the champion of Boys 10 at the L1B CourtSense at Bogota & TRC Racquet Club December Challenger. Bobby defeated the #1 seed in the semifinals; Griffin Schlesinger won the Boys 14 title at the L1B Point Set Winter Challenger. Thanksgiving Weekend Bountiful for JMTA Students

Thanksgiving weekend brought in a harvest of championships for JMTA students in tournament play.

Audrey Pacthod won at Girls 16s at the L1B TI Academy Thanksgiving Challenger. Audrey defeated the #2 seed in the finals; Isabella Sha took the Girls 12 title at the L1B Jericho/Westbury Fall Challenger by defeating the #1 seed in the finals; Laura Ziets-Segura was the champion at Girls 10 at the L1B GHRC Glen Head Challenger; Ari Cotoulas won the Boys 12 Singles title at the L1B WOTC Thanksgiving Challenger.
