When we last checked in with JMTA’ers Julian Rozenstien and Sasha Lebedev at The Goombay Splash Bowl, both had won their 1st round matches. Sasha unfortunately lost his 2nd round match, but the big story is the run Julian made. After receiving a walkover in the 2nd round, Julian faced off against top seeded Rasheed Carey from the Bahamas. After splitting the first two sets and trading games in the 3rd, Julian outlasted Rasheed in the 3rd set to win the match 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. In the semifinals, Julian beat Treajh Ferguson 6-3, 6-0 to reach the finals.
Already a fantastic tournament for Julian, this morning he took on the #6 seed, Christian Langmo, in the finals. Christian has been on a tear the entire tournament, not dropping a single set. This includes his win over Sasha in the 2nd round, which he won 6-4, 6-4. In the finals, while Julian fought hard, like the rest of Christian’s opponents, he lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Julian’s JMTA Coach, Felix Alvarado, is pleased with his student, “Julian played a great tournament and I am very proud of how hard he fought. I hope he plays as well and fights as hard as he did in the Bahamas, in Panama this week.”
Julian and Sasha will be making their way to Panama this weekend in preparation for the Panama Bowl. The tournament begins this coming Monday and both Julian and Sasha do not have to qualify. Check back throughout the week for Panama Bowl updates!
