Three Win Weekend Events

Sam Turchetta, George Kaslow and Zoe Tucker (pictured, alongside finalist Anne Moody) won titles in abbreviated JMTA action the weekend of March 20-23.

Turchetta won Boys 18 singles at the Eastern Super Six Stadium Tennis Center (National L4); Kaslow took Boys 16 at the L1B Sportime Randall’s Island March Challenger; and Tucker claimed the L2 Sportime Lake Isle September Open.

Six Win Titles Weekend Of March 13-15

Six JMTA students took championships the weekend of March 13-15.

Xavier Pacthod (pictured) won at Boys 18 singles at the L1B Sportime Lake Isle Spring Challenger; Alex Portnoy won Boys 14 singles and Denise Lai was the winner at Girls 14 singles at the at the L1B WG March Challenger; Alex Vinsky took Boys 12 singles at the L1B Jericho/Westbury March Challenger; Dominick Mosejczuk was the Boys 10 singles champion at the L1B 10U Hardscrabble Open; and Sophie Cisse claimed the Girls 12 singles title at the L2O Sportime Harbor Island Spring Open.

JMTA Tournament Team Update

JMTA’s Tournament Travel Team has had a busy few weeks! The latest JMTA Training Camp was held on Sunday, March 8th at SPORTIME Bethpage for Boys and Girls 14 & Under.  Just a few days later, on March 10th,  Coach Greg Bolitsky accompanied a group of JMTA students to the BNP Paribas Showdown at Madison Square Garden featuring Roger Federer, Grigor Dimitrov, Monica Seles and Gabriela Sabatini, and  the Team wrapped up the week with a challenge match against the High-Performance Tennis Academy from Philadelphia, PA on March 15th at SPORTIME Bethpage.

Led by JMTA players Cannon Kingsley, Spencer Brachman, Billy Suarez, Joseph Wilkanowski, Chelsea Williams, Diana McCready, Perene Wang, Daniela Hernandez, Daniella Benabraham, and Rebecca Suarez, JMTA defeated HPTA on Sunday, March 15th at SPORTIME Bethpage. “Congratulations to all of the players who competed in the challenge match against the HPTA-Riverside Academy”, said Coach Bolitsky. “Everyone did an amazing job representing JMTA, conducting themselves professionally, and exhibiting great sportsmanship in their victory.”

March 15 Challenge Match March 8 Training Camp

Suarez, Gradin Take Weekend Championships

Rebecca Suarez, who won the Girls 12 singles at the L1B Point Set Tennis Springtime Challenger, and Harrison Graden, the champion at Boys 10 singles at the L1B Bethpage State Park March Challenger, took tournament titles the weekend ending March 8. Gradin toppled the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds en route to his crown.

Stony Brook’s Elizabeth Tsvetkov is the America East Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

Freshman Elizabeth Tsvetkov of Stony Brook has been named the America East Player of the Week by the Division I conference.

In its wrapup of the week, AmericaEast.com noted that Elizabeth did not lose a match, going 4-0 against ranked opponents.

Against the No. 43 ranked in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, Tsvetkov teamed up with Kristina Vozniak to win their doubles match (6-3). She then went on to defeat her singles opponent in No. 4 singles 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

The Seawolves did lose their perfect record the following day against No. 36 Harvard, 5 points to 2.  In the loss, Tsvetkov and Vozniak won again in their doubles match (8-5), and the Brooklyn, New York native completed the undefeated week with a 7-5, 6-0 win.

Tsvetkov’s heroics have helped the Seawolves earn their first national ranking, at No. 53 by the ITA.

Seven Win Weekend Titles

Seven JMTA students earned championships, including five in singles, the weekend ending Feb. 25.

Lubomir Cuba won in Boys 18 singles at the L1 New Shrewsbury Racquet Club Eastern Grand Prix; Sean Patrick was the Boys 18 champ at the L1B Point Set Tennis February Challenger; and Harrison Gradin (pictured) took Boys 10 singles at the L1B Tennis Gladiatorz Championships; and Taylor Overstrom won Girls 12 singles at the L2O Sportime Lynbrook.

Three JMTA students won at Boys 14 at the L2O Jericho/Westbury Winter Open: Harrison Saladini was the singles champ and the tandem of Aaron and Alex Vinsky won the doubles title.

Werdiger, Jippov, Kelly, Hendon Win Weekend Titles

Four JMTA students won titles over the weekend ending February 25.

Robbie Werdiger (pictured) was the champion at Boys 14 at the L1A at Sportime Schenectady; Adrien Jippov took the Boys 12 crown at the L1B Cunningham Park Tennis Center February Challenger, knocking off the No. 2 seed and defeating fellow JMTA student Astro Pilipovic in the final. Pilipovic had taken out the No. 1 seed along the way.

Titles were also claimed by Merri Kelly (Girls 18, L1B GHRC Winter Challenger) and David Hendon (Boys 12, O Sportime Syosset February Open).
