Howe Wins At SPORTIME Bethpage

Gardner Howe won the Boys 16 event at the L1B Sportime Bethpage June Challenger, highlighting abbreviated action the week ending June 22.

Three JMTA students reached semifinals, including Anna Maite Kaplan (Girls 18, L1B Sportime Syosset June Challenger), Janelle Chen (Girls 14, L1B Bethpage State Park Summer Challenger) and Natalie Margulies (Girls 16, L2O TTTC June Open).

Sec, Jackson, Karman, Kargin-Utkin Win Titles

Four JMTA students won titles over the weekend of June 12-14, as Oliver Sec, Shawn Jackson, Francesca Karman and Alina Kargin-Utkin took crowns.

Sec won at Boys 18 at the Eastern Super Six Section Championships in Mendham, N.J.; Jackson was the Boys 18 winner at the L1B CourtSense BRC & TRC June Challenger (topping fellow JMTAer Xavier Pacthod in the final); Karman took the Girls 16 championship at the L1B GHRC Summer Challenger; and Kargin-Utkin was the Girls 14 champ at the L2O Sportime Syosset June Open.

Michelle Sorroko was also a finalist at Girls 16 at the Eastern Super Six Section Championship in Maywood, N.J.

Three Mayor’s Cup Champions Highlight JMTA Tournament Play

Shawn Jackson, Solomon Brown and Natalie Eordekian won titles in the Mayor’s Cup All-Scholastic Tennis Championships, highlighting a strong weekend of play for JMTA students over the weekend.

Jackson won the Boys’ Varsity Singles title, while Brown was the Boys’ Elementary School winner and Eordekian the Elementary Girls winner.

Other weekly winners were Billy Suarez (Boys 14, Eastern Super Six Championships at Mendham), Scott Fischer (Boys 14, L1B West Rock June Challenger), Bradley Bennett (Boys 12, L1B Sportime Syosset June Challenger), Ashley Lessen (1B Jericho/Westbury Summer Challenger) and Jack Benavides (L2O Westhampton Beach Open).

Shawn was also named an Advance all-star by the Staten Island Advance.

Kachkarov Wins To Highlight Weekend Tournament Play

Katherine Kachkarov won Girls 18s at the L1B WG May Challenger, highlighting abbreviated tournament play for JMTA students the weekend of May 29-31.

Denise Lai (Girls 16) reached the finals at the same event as Kachkarov, while the team of Sean Mullins and Sean Patrick teamed up as runners-up at Boys 18 doubles at the 2015 NYSPHSAA Boys Tennis Championships.
