JMTA Players Impress over the Weekend of April 22nd – 24th

USTA Tournament Results 4/22-4/24

With the players of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy working hard to ‘Train 52’, it is no surprise that several JMTA players won tournaments in Eastern competition this past weekend!

At the Level 1B Armonk Sports Center’s April Challenger, Eikoh Hayashi won the Boys 18 title. In his run to the championship, Eikoh faced tough competition including defeating the #2 seed in the Semifinals. At the Level 1B Cary Leeds April Flowers Challenger, Felix Levine also defeated the #2 seed in the Semifinals in the Boys 16 competition. Perhaps what was more impressive about Felix’s tournament championship is that he defeated the #1 seed in the Finals 6-0; 6-0. After losing the first set in the finals match against the #1 seed, Alex Vinsky fought from behind to claim the Boys 14 title at the Level 1B SPORTIME Bethpage Spring Challenger. At the Level 1B SPORTIME at Randall’s Island April Challenger, Sidarth Chawla defeated the #1 seed in the Finals as well. At the Level 1B Jericho/Westbury Spring Challenger, the JMTA claimed both the Girls 12 and Boys 12 titles. For the Girls 12 competition, Taylor Overstrom won, while for the Boys 12 competition, Andrew Ena took home the trophy. Our last winner for this weekend was Jack Kennedy. Golovin Named To All-Freshman SEC Team

(via LSU Sports Info.)

After a strong performances at No. 2 singles this year, Jessica Golovin has been named to the All-Freshman team, the league office announced Wednesday.

Golovin owns an 11-14 record in dual matches this season. Golovin has competed against 17 ranked opponents. This season, Golovin clinched the Lady Tigers’ win over Georgia Tech in the ITA Kickoff Weekend and win over Kentucky in the second round of the SEC Tournament.

Her teammate Joana Vale Costa was named to first team All-SEC.

LSU returns to the practice courts over the next few weeks before competing in the NCAA Regional May 13-15. The selection show for the tournament is at 4 p.m. CT Tuesday on NCAA.com.

Golovin Leads LSU To 4-3 Win Over Kentucky

JMTA star and LSU freshman Jessica Golovin rallied to win in three sets on court two to lead the No. 20 Lady Tigers to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over No. 23 Kentucky in the second round of the SEC Women’s Tennis Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the LSU Tennis Complex.

Golovin, ranked No. 59 in singles, defeated No. 75 Justina Mikulskyte, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the victory and send the Lady Tigers into the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament.

“Kentucky gave us a heck of a match,” co-head coach Julia Sell said. “That was an unbelievable finish. Jessica is a special story today because the girl she played is usually number one. To come back after losing the first set and pull it out is big for her and the team.”
