JMTA’ers Sasha Lebedev and Julian Rozenstein played their first round matches yesterday in singles and doubles at the Ace Tennis U18 ITF World Ranking Event in Ontario, Canada. Both advanced to the 2nd round of the singles rather easily. Julian bested Ivan Mitric of Canada 6-0, 6-2, while Sasha’s opponent, Victor Krustev of Canada, retired down 4-3 in the opening set. In doubles, Julian and his partner, Chris Fletcher of Canada, won their 1st round match 6-2, 6-3. Sasha’s match, on the other hand, wasn’t as straightforward. After losing the first set 7-5, Sasha and his partner, Elijah Ogilvy of Canada, fought back to win the 2nd set in a tiebreak and even up the match at one set all. Instead of a full 3rd set, the pair played a 10 point super tiebreaker to determine the winner. Unfortunately, Sasha and Elijah lost the super tiebreaker and the match. Still, Sasha remains a contender in the singles draw and we are excited to see how he and Julian play the rest of this week. Julian’s coach, JMTA Assistant Academy Director Felix Alvarado, called Julian’s win “well fought” and “deserved” and said, “Julian has been working hard to improve his game and advance to the next level. The progress we’ve made and the effort he has put in is beginning to show.”
In their second round matches, a tougher test awaits for each, as Sasha is matched up against the #14 seed, Maxim Borcuti of Canada, while Julian faces the #8 seed, Elijah Ogilvy, also of Canada. Be sure to check back for their 2nd round results tomorrow.
