Top-seeded Jamie Loeb Opens NCAA Singles With Straight-Set Wins

No rest for the weary as Jamie Loeb, fresh off competing in the team finals, began her quest for an individual NCAA title at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., yesterday. Loeb bounced Alexandra Cercone of Florida, 6-2, 7-5.

Today she topped Zoe Scandalis of USC, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16. Later today she will team with classmate Hayley Carter in doubles action.

In addition, this week Loeb, 52-3 in singles including the wins the last two days, was named the ITA Rookie Player of the Year and will attempt to repeat the feat of John McEnroe, who won the NCAA singles title in his freshman year, on the same Univ. of Georgia courts.

She was also a major factor in UNC’s run to the finals of the team competition, where the Tar Heels fell just short on Tuesday, 4-3, to UCLA.
