McEnroe, Students Take Part In Randall’s Island Riverkeeper Sweep

John McEnroe and Academy students were among the army of volunteers clearing trash and removing invasive plants at Randall’s Island Park today.

Riverkeeper is a member-supported watchdog organization dedicated to defending the Hudson River and its tributaries and protecting the drinking water supply of nine million New York City and Hudson Valley residents.

McEnroe was joined by (see photo above) Sabrina Xiong, Madison Battaglia, Felipe Osses-Konig and Oliver Sec.

Among the work they performed were clearing invasive plants and litter from Little Hell Gate Saltwater Marsh, a rare, 5-acre habitat on the Harlem River; an urban forest (and former Christmas tree dump site) up the slope from the marsh, and the Little Hell Gate Freshwater Wetland, which helps filter stormwater runoff from the island’s playing fields.
