Bonnie D. Ford of ESPN, in the below article, gives a nice   re-cap of how the United States did in Day 1 of the Australian Open.  Although the U.S. sent only one seeded male to the Open this year, Sam Querrey (20), they had an amazing first day of play going 4-2 against foreign opponents with both losses being against seeded players. Click here to read full article.

  • Tim Smyczek (USA) def. Ivo Karlovic (6-4, 7-6 [5], 7-5)
  • Nicolas Almagro [10] def. Steve Johnson (USA) (7-5, 6-7 [4], 6-2, 6-7 [6], 6-2)
  • Tomas Berdych [5] def. Michael Russell (USA) (3-6, 5-7, 3-6)

Tomorrow, the remaining two Americans will play their first round matches:

  • Rajeev Ram (USA) v. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
  • Rhyne Williams (USA) v. Florian Mayer [25]
