American Serena Williams routs Edina Gallovits-Hall for the 3rd “Double Bagel” of her career, but not before scaring the tennis world by rolling her ankle in the first set. After her 54 minute win, Serena declined an x-ray deciding to wait to see if the ankle swells up overnight. Still, at her post-match press conference she reassured tennis fans by saying, “I’m alive. My heart’s beating. I’ll be fine.”
Victoria Azarenka , who won in straight sets, kept a close eye on her rival’s ankle injury. When asked about Serena’s injury she responded, “I heard she won love and love, so what kind of injury are we talking about?”
In the end, the best clue we will have as to the status of Serena’s ankle will be whether she decides to participate in the Women’s Doubles Tournament with her sister. Doubles begins when play resumes Wednesday, but the Williams sisters are not scheduled to begin until Thursday; the same day Serena’s 2nd round match is scheduled for.
