HAPPY BIRTHDAY PETER FLEMING
The John McEnroe Tennis Academy would like to wish a very Happy Birthday to Associate Academy Director Peter Fleming. Peter turned 58 earlier this week (January 21) and in honor of his birthday, he is the subject of this week’s “Get to know the Pro”!
Peter, a native of Chatam, NJ, has been a highly successful tennis professional, as a player, coach and commentator, for over 40 years. He teamed up with John McEnroe to become one of the greatest doubles teams in tennis history. The duo won 54 doubles titles together, including four Wimbledon and three U.S. Open Grand Slam championships. The pair was named ATP Doubles Team of the Year in 1979, 1981 and 1983-84. Fleming played on three American Davis Cup winning teams 1979, 1981-82 and compiled a Davis Cup doubles record of 14-1, all with Johnny Mac. He reached the world No. 1 doubles ranking in 1984 and had a career high singles ranking of No. 8 in 1980. Prior to turning professional, Fleming played collegiate tennis for Michigan and UCLA; in 1976, he won the NCAA doubles title and led the Bruins to the NCAA team championship. Since retiring as a player, he has become a lead commentator for Sky Sports and relocated back to New York in 2012 to again team up with partner John McEnroe as Associate Academy Director of JMTA, at both Randall’s Island and Lake Isle.
Peter is now splitting his time between SPORTIME Randall’s Island and SPORTIME Lake Isle, where he is working both with JMTA’s top junior players as well as adult members.
