The North Carolina women’s tennis team will play for its first National Championship after defeating Stanford, 4-3, on Monday in a semifinal match in Athens, Ga.
It came down to the first singles matchup between No. 1 Jamie Loeb and No. 3 Kristie Ahn of Stanford, and Loeb showed why she deserves that top collegiate rank.
After a first-set tiebreaker went to Ahn, 7-4, Loeb got down to business, sweeping each of the next two sets, 6-0, 6-0.
For Loeb, who also teamed with classmate Hayley Carter to down Ahn and Carol Zhao, 8-5, to help the Tar Heels win the doubles point, it was the 50th singles victory of the season.
Seventh seeded UNC takes on No. 5 UCLA, a 4-0 winner over Florida, in the National Championship on Tuesday in Athens.
