SPORTIME/JMTA - Hamptons Tennis Training Camp Guidelines

SPORTIME’s commitment to creating a happy and safe environment for your children has guided our work for more than 20 years. Our camp has been a place where every child can have fun, make friends and create lifelong memories. 

In the context of COVID-19, our focus remains the health and wellbeing of our campers, our camp families and our staff. Summer 2020 camp was different from past years; it had to be. But we were able to provide our campers with an amazing camp experience that dramatically minimized risk, while maximizing fun and friendship. Below are the guidelines SPORTIME followed during the summer of  2020, without a single covid related incident! For summer 2021, these guidelines may change, based upon state and local government mandates, or, may, we hope, be eliminated in their entirety with the pandemic behind us! 

Notwithstanding all the precautions that SPORTIME will take, due to the nature of the virus, the risk of contracting COVID-19 remains, as we are all aware. Please be safe, respect others and follow all of the precautions, protections and protocols put in place during this COVID-19 epidemic.  

CAMP GUIDELINES

Daily Health Screenings of Staff and Players

  • All staff will be screened upon arrival, and before starting work, each morning. This will include a temperature check and an online self-screening. Any staff member exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, either upon arrival, or at any point during the camp day, will be sent home, and will need to be symptom free and test negative for the virus before returning.
  • Per NYS mandate, all parents will be required to complete a quick, online health screening for their child(ren) in advance of their arrival at JMTA each day. JMTA players whose parents have completed the online screening should proceed directly to the JMTA tent, located just west of the main office and main deck area. At the JMTA tent, player/camper temperatures will be taken by JMTA camp staff using touchless, point and shoot thermometers. Players whose temperatures are lower than 99.5 degrees will be escorted to their groups. Any player whose temperature reading is 99.5 degrees or higher will be sent home and will be asked to see a doctor and to receive a medical clearance/negative COVID-19 test before returning. Parents are asked not to leave the club grounds until they are certain that their child has been cleared to participate. Parents who are unable to complete the screening in advance will be directed to a waiting area, where the screening can be completed before their child/ren can proceed to temperature taking and begin their camp day. Any JMTA player exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, either upon arrival, or at any point during the camp day, will be sent home, and will need to be symptom free and test negative for the virus before returning. 
  • Parents must keep children home if they are exhibiting any of the following symptoms:
    • Fever or chills 
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Any other signs of illness
  • Our JMTA Academy Director reserves the right to send campers and staff members home should they exhibit any of the above symptoms.

Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures

  • All JMTA Summer Training campers should be dropped off and picked up at the main club entrance at 320 Abrahams Path. 
  • To ensure the safety of our campers, parents and visitors are asked to minimize their stays on campus. All parents must wear face coverings at all times while on premises.

Camp Groupings & Modified Activities

  • We will keep the player groups as consistent as possible throughout the summer.  
  • We will minimize interaction between groups and physical distancing will be assured during any such interactions.

Enhanced Hygiene Practices

  • Frequent hand washing and sanitizing will be encouraged and required. We will have indoor and outdoor hand washing stations, and/or sanitizing stations, offering wipes and alcohol-based hand sanitizer, close to all activity areas.
  • Hand washing and/or hand sanitizing will be required after each activity/training session, and will be required before and after snack, water breaks and lunch. 
  • Campers and coaches will also wash or sanitize their hands upon arrival each morning, throughout the day, and prior to dismissal at the conclusion of the camp day.

Intensified Cleaning and Sanitizing Practices

  • The JMTA tent and all JMTA areas will be cleaned throughout the day by a designated housekeeping staff member.
  • All tennis teaching equipment, including carts, hoppers and any fitness equipment will be sanitized after each session to ensure the safety of the next group.
  • At the conclusion of each day, our repair, maintenance and housekeeping teams will follow enhanced cleaning protocols to ensure that every facility area, inside and outside, is sanitized for the following day.

Use of Face Coverings

  • JMTA coaches will wear face coverings during all interactions with campers when physical distancing cannot be achieved. 
  • It is our hope that campers will not have to wear face coverings, or will wear them infrequently. However, should face coverings be required by NYS and/or by the Department of Health, or for brief periods when distancing may be hard to maintain, we will make camper face coverings happen and we will make them fun. In an abundance of caution, as of August 17th, we will be suspending the use of neck gaiters based upon recent reports that this particular style of protective face covering may not effectively prevent virus transmission. Because neck gaiters are the easiest style of face covering for our coaches, players and campers to wear and deploy comfortably and when needed, we are in the process of sourcing a neck gaiter option that provides protection equal to or better than the two-ply cotton face masks. Until we have such a gaiter available, we will be using/providing the mask style face covering.  Please also note that the N-95 type masks with exhalation valves protect wearers, but do not block the release of the particles that could impact those around the wearer.  Please refrain from wearing single layer gaiters, bandanas, and N-95 masks with exhalation valves on Sportime premises and, instead, wear two ply face coverings that are known to provide an effective barrier to transmission.

Increased Training of Staff

  • All SPORTIME camp staff complete a thorough orientation and training each summer prior to camp. This summer, our staff training will be expanded to include all of our updated safety protocols and activity modifications. Our commitment is that campers will remain safe while at SPORTIME and, despite some necessary adjustments, will have a fun and unforgettable summer camp experience.

Lunch, Snack and Hydration

  • Lunch service provided by our third-party cafe operator will not be vailable for summer 2020. Parents should provide their children with lunch and snacks in an insulated lunch bag. 
  • Lunch schedules will be staggered to reduce the number of campers during each lunch session, and seating will be spaced-out and forward facing to assure adequate physical distancing.
  • If SPORTIME provides snacks, they will be in individual, pre-packaged servings.
  • We will ensure that JMTA players hydrate throughout the camp day. Water stations will be operated by camp staff only and will be used to fill camper water bottles, which we encourage parents to provide, or single-use, disposable cups.

Rain Day Plans

  • Based on health department and NYS guidance, and for everyone’s safety, on days when the forecast calls for rain for the entire camp day, or when rain begins early and is forecasted to continue throughout the day, JMTA will be canceled. Sportime will arrange make-up sessions for full-day cancellations only, when possible.

Procedures When Someone at Camp is Sick

  • If a camper or a staff member becomes sick with COVID-19 symptoms, and/or tests positive for COVID-19, SPORTIME will follow all State and County Department of Health guidelines to ensure the safety of all other campers, staff and camp families. These protocols may include quarantine for the symptomatic or sick camper or staff member, as many as 14 days off from camp for members of the camper’s or staff member’s group, contact tracing, additional facility cleaning, the testing of those who may have made contact with the infected camper or staff, further quarantines or stay at home requests, as may be recommended by health officials, and any other sensible actions designed to keep the larger community safe as any impacted persons recover.
